Freed Gets Winning Hit for Panthers

Amanda Freed, the two-time Times Orange County softball player of the year, had the game-winning hit as Gordon’s Panthers of Cypress beat Gary Haning’s Orange County Batbusters, 1-0, in eight innings to win the Amateur Softball Assn. Gold national championship game Sunday in Phoenix.
Freed, who is going to UCLA, pitched a one-hitter as the Panthers beat the Batbusters, 4-0, in the winners’ bracket final also Sunday.

Ray Vincent of the Mission Viejo Nadadores finished second in the platform division at the U.S. National Senior qualifying competition Sunday at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.
Vincent’s three-day total was 435.36 points. The top five finishers qualify for the senior nationals, Aug. 14-19 in Atlanta.
In women’s competition, Kristen Marquis of Crown Valley Divers finished second with 392.28 points.

The Golden West Water Polo Club defeated Davis, 5-3, to finish third at the U.S. senior national championships Sunday at Annapolis, Md.
Robin Beauregard (Marina High School, UCLA) and Brenda Villa scored twice for Golden West.
