Castro Is Saluted by Former Enemy

When he was a rebellious university student 50 years ago, Fidel Castro boarded a boat with other revolutionaries and sailed for the Dominican Republic to oust its dictator. In 1959, when Castro took power in Cuba, he sponsored an invasion of the neighboring island nation. Four decades later, the Communist leader arrived to a red-carpet welcome in Santo Domingo, the capital, where President Leonel Fernandez thanked him for that long-ago attempt to liberate Dominicans from tyranny.
