A truck driver suffered a heart attack and died behind the wheel of his big rig Friday on the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The 48-year-old driver from Los Angeles was traveling at 45 mph in the slow lane when he had the heart attack about 7:25 a.m. His rig veered across two lanes into the center divider and scraped the guardrail until coming to a stop near Bear Street in Costa Mesa, said CHP spokeswoman JoAnn O’Haire.
Officers withheld the name of the victim pending family notification. No one else was hurt in the crash.
Two of the freeway’s three lanes were closed until about 9:30 a.m.
