Stoops Takes Over at Oklahoma

Bob Stoops, a defensive specialist who played a part in rebuilding Kansas State and helped lead Florida to a national title, was hired Tuesday as Oklahoma’s football coach.
It’s the first head coaching job for Stoops. He replaced John Blake, who was fired Nov. 22 after a 12-22 record in three seasons.
“I shall not shy away from the expectations that you have at Oklahoma,” Stoops said after he was introduced at a news conference in Norman, Okla. “There are no excuses. You succeed or you don’t.”
Stoops, 38, played and coached at Iowa and was defensive coordinator at Kansas State before taking the same job at Florida three years ago.
Florida has been ranked in the nation’s top 15 in defense during each of Stoops’ seasons there.
Stoops will take over an Oklahoma program that has not had a winning season since 1993.

Tommy Bowden will become head coach at Clemson and may not coach Tulane in the Liberty Bowl, the (Columbia, S.C.) State reported.
Bowden will tell Tulane’s athletic director and president before lunchtime today, according to the newspaper.
Clemson, which reportedly has offered to pay half of Bowden’s $750,000 buyout clause, plans a Thursday news conference to introduce him as the school’s 23rd football coach, the newspaper said. A Clemson spokesman did not immediately return a call from the Associated Press.
