In the final tune-up before a trip to Texas and Tennessee, the UCLA women’s team extended its winning streak to six games with a 104-56 victory over host San Diego State in front of 972 at Cox Arena on Friday.
The Bruins reached their highest point total of the season thanks to seven UCLA players scoring in double figures, led by junior forward Maylana Martin’s 18 points and nine rebounds in only 18 minutes.
“I wasn’t expecting to play that many minutes, and I didn’t,” Martin said. “But I’m glad I made an impact when I was in the game.”
Two UCLA players finished with double doubles. Junior guard Erica Gomez finished with 10 points and 11 assists, and junior center Janae Hubbard scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
With 1:22 left in the first half, San Diego State closed the Bruin lead to 40-36, thank to two consecutive three-point baskets from Kaly Gillette and Sophia Sledge.
However, the Bruins (6-2) turned up their defense and started the second half with a 27-8 run.
“I feel we started well tonight,” Coach Kathy Olivier said. “Then we just got a little relaxed. We said that this was the first of three road games, and I think Texas will be a great test for us.”
UCLA’s winning streak is the longest since the 1992-93 season, when the Bruins won seven in a row. UCLA will try to tie that record on the road in Texas next Saturday before taking on three-time defending NCAA champion Tennessee in Knoxville on Dec. 21.
Kelly Rushford, a freshman making her first start, scored 13 points to lead the Aztecs (2-6), who shot only 29% from the field (19 of 65).
