*** 1/2 Robert Wyatt, “Shleep,” Thirsty Ear. The early-’70s Canterbury School of wistful English pop comes alive in Robert Wyatt’s latest, and it sounds surprisingly fresh. This is music as demanding as it is pleasant, soaked in melancholy but imbued with a poignant sense of hope. Brian Eno, Paul Weller and Phil Manzanera contribute subtle instrumental touches, without ever overshadowing Wyatt, the quirky poet and jazzy multi-instrumentalist.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four stars (excellent).
