Hit-and-Run Driver

Re “Pity the Pedestrian,” editorial, Jan. 24: On a rainy Friday night recently, I headed home at about 9:15. I have a short commute over surface streets. Lying in the middle of one of those dark streets was what at first looked to be a roll of carpet. But as I slowed and drove by, the carpet turned out to be wearing shoes.

I don’t know how long I crouched in the rain, laying hands on this man who was bleeding and wheezing for air, in an effort to comfort him while we awaited the ambulance. I do know that when I got home I was shaking.

Few evil deeds can surpass the one inflicted on this poor man. I cannot fathom how someone could hit him and leave him in the road. But he is recovering. I hope the person who hit him recovers too.
