Arts Used as Outreach by Wide Range of Teachers

The contributions of George Balanchine to modern ballet and the educational outreach programs of the Getty museum were among the subjects discussed at a workshop for arts teachers held the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.
“Teachers are now more than ever turning to the performing arts and entertainment mediums as a conduit to inspire students to learn,” said Stacy Brightman, director of education and youth outreach at the Cerritos Center.
English and history teachers increasingly are turning to period plays and films to supplement text books, and science and math teachers find dance and music equally valuable, Brightman said.
More than 40 elementary and secondary teachers from Los Angeles and Orange counties attended the seminar on Sunday. Another session is scheduled Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
