With $25,000 contributed by a law firm, the Oxnard Boys & Girls Club has raised about $600,000 of $2.1 million needed to build a recreation center in midtown Oxnard, officials say.
The donation came from Lowthorp, Richards, McMillan, Miller, Conway & Templeman of Oxnard and will fund the facility’s teen center.
The recreation center--tentatively planned for 5th and Patterson streets--will include a gymnasium, library, arts and crafts room, kitchen, children’s theater, soccer field and tennis courts.
Officials, who began raising money in November, plan to continue the campaign through the end of the year. The center is scheduled to be built by 2000.
The Oxnard Boys & Girls Club provides after-school care for children and youth from 6 to 18 at seven locations. Membership is $10 to $12 a year.
