Valencia Names Cox Coach

Chris Cox, Valencia’s junior varsity coach, has been named interim girls’ basketball coach, replacing Coach Mike Arias.
According to Arias, he resigned Dec. 19 after a meeting with principal David Verdugo. Arias said that meeting came after a dispute between the coach and a player’s parents.
Verdugo could not be reached for comment.

Newport Harbor’s Scott Dore and Corona del Mar’s Sarah Petry committed to Princeton, Corona del Mar’s Audrey Anhood to Brown and Esperanza’s Aprille Brown to Idaho State.

Julie Swail, who played for the Valencia High boys’ water polo team in the early 1990s, is playing with the U.S. women’s team, which opens the women’s world championship against Russia Thursday in Sydney, Australia.
