Groundbreaking Today for Park

A grass plot across from the Newbury Park Library will soon become Thousand Oaks’ 38th park, as a groundbreaking ceremony for the Newbury Gateway Park will be held at 1 p.m. today.
Set at the southeast corner of Borchard Road and Michael Drive, the 2.5-acre park should be ready for use in about six months, said Tom Sorensen, planning administrator for the Conejo Recreation and Park District.
A federal highway grant is paying $200,000 toward the park. The city came up with an additional $70,000 and the park district contributed $65,000.
Sorensen said the bulk of the grant money comes from a federal pot slated for scenic enhancement each time highway improvements are made. When the Borchard Road onramp was created a few years ago, grant money was made available.
The park will include a concrete walkway, child play area, picnic tables, benches, a drinking fountain, wrought iron fencing and a lighted gateway sign. About 100 oak trees have already been planted.
“This park will be a good combination of active use and passive open space,” Sorensen said.
