Police Chief Could Quit Because of Health

Police Chief Daryl Wicker may announce his resignation by the end of the week after undergoing a quadruple-bypass heart operation.
Wicker, who has suffered two heart attacks in the last couple of years, is expected to make a decision by Friday, City Manager Mark J. Ochenduszko said.
Anticipating Wicker’s resignation, the City Council met in closed session this week to consider hiring a recruitment firm to find a replacement.
The city would spend $15,000 for the firm, which would be chosen by the city manager.
Ochenduszko said the city would agree to a statewide recruitment only if Wicker were to announce his resignation.
Wicker, 51, has been off duty since suffering a heart attack in March.
He has been a member of the Police Department for 29 years and chief for the last nine.
