Knee Injury Sidelines Wolverines’ Munoz

Harvard-Westlake High (13-3), The Times’ No. 4-ranked boys’ basketball team in the region, will be without senior point guard Victor Munoz tonight against Alemany and probably on Friday in a key Mission League matchup at Chaminade.

Munoz, who is averaging 15.8 points, 5.8 assists and three steals, injured his left knee Friday night in a game against St. Francis and is awaiting medical consultation on an MRI.

“He was all by himself. There was no contact or anything. It buckled and he hyperextended it,” Coach Greg Hilliard said. “It was just kind of a freak accident.”

With Munoz sitting out Monday, Loyola ended the Wolverines’ streak of 27 consecutive league victories with a 69-64 victory.

“The guys took about three quarters to figure out how to play without [Munoz] and by then it was too late,” Hilliard said.

On the line tonight against Alemany is Harvard-Westlake’s 38-game winning streak at home.

SOCCER

On the job: Philip Marcellin, formerly of Bakersfield College, has been hired as coach at Canyons.

Marcellin compiled a 58-29-8 record in five seasons at Bakersfield. Marcellin was selected Western State Conference coach of the year in 1994 after leading Bakersfield to its first conference championship.

Marcellin is the first women’s soccer coach at Canyons.

SOFTBALL

New Cardinal: Christina Chao of Hart High has signed a letter of intent to play at Stanford.

Chao, Hart’s top offensive player last year when she batted .325 and had 14 runs batted in, is one of two players from the region to sign with the Cardinal. Camarillo’s Jessica Mendoza signed in November.

HONORS

Recognized: Angela Davison and John Sanders will be honored as the Antelope Valley College scholar athletes for 1996-97 during halftime of the men’s basketball game against Barstow on Feb. 14.

The ceremony originally was scheduled for halftime of the Rio Hondo-Antelope Valley men’s game Saturday, but the game was postponed until Monday because of a Rio Hondo administrative error.

DIVING

Dumais takes 10th: Troy Dumais of Ventura placed 10th in the three-meter springboard at the World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia, Tuesday.

Dumais, a senior at Buena High, finished with 565.68 points. Dmitry Sautin of Russia won the event with 746.79 points.
