VW Beetles

Patt Morrison’s diatribe against the VW Beetle was interesting (Jan. 9). Naturally, she is entitled to her opinion. I’d bet, though, the aficionados outnumber the detractors 1,000 to 1.
My first Beetle was a brand new 1965, and I was at once struck with its ingenious functionality. It was the right car at the right time for us college students, and its unstylish exterior masked the beauty within. How we loved our “bugs.” My wife and I, who owned five Beetles between us, can hardly wait for a close look at the new version.
To the contrary, the Corvair, recalled fondly by Morrison, represents almost everything wrong with the American cars of that era.
