Ji Leads Monroe to Wrestling Victory

Monroe High’s Steven Ji won by technical fall over Chatsworth’s Otto Vecente in a 119-pound match to spark the Vikings to a 41-31 City Section wrestling victory Thursday night at Monroe.
The victory improved Ji’s record to 17-3.
Monroe’s Clyde Silla (130 pounds) improved to 16-3 after pinning Zach Wilson in 1:15.
Sarkis Barsegyan (215), who won nine of 10 matches last week at the Highland Invitational, scored a 4-1 decision over Chatsworth’s Mark Valdez. Barsegyan improved to 18-2.
In other wrestling matches:
Birmingham 59, University 24--Braves Jonathan Salceido (119 pounds), Chris Jonjajsonjit (145), David Bogosian (152), Lozaro Zamora (160), Jeff Ward (189) and Ismael Casteneda (215) each pinned opponents in less than three minutes (3-3, 1-0) in a Valley League opener at Birmingham (3-3).
Newbury Park 56, Agoura 30--Jason Bond (142) pinned Jesse Smith and Vinnie Quiroz pinned Jud Callaway (154) for the Panthers (5-1 in league) in a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Burroughs 10, Crescenta Valley 8--Sarah Vejar had four goals, and Shareen Pena and Nicole Hoil Dreth each added two for the Indians (8-7) in a nonleague game at Crescenta Valley.
Dos Pueblos 11, Buena 8--Brenna Huhn scored four goals and Katie Griffith added three but the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-5) fell in a Channel League game at Buena.
