Clinton Names Interim Official to Fill U.S. Atty. Post

SACRAMENTO — President Clinton nominated veteran prosecutor Paul Seave on Thursday to be the U.S. attorney for the sprawling eastern district of California, which stretches from Bakersfield to the Oregon border.
“Paul is an experienced federal prosecutor with hands-on experience,” U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in announcing the nomination. Feinstein recommended Seave for the Sacramento-based post last summer.
Seave, 44, has worked as interim U.S. attorney in the state capital since April. The Philadelphia native has been with the U.S. Justice Department for 12 years, serving as the top assistant in Sacramento since November 1993.
He said the top priority of the office will be to prosecute methamphetamine drug cases and crack down on public corruption.
Seave, whose nomination goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee for review, supervises 65 attorneys based in Sacramento and Fresno.
On Tuesday, his office announced one of its highest profile cases in recent years--the indictment of 20 people on charges of falsifying citizenship examinations for as many as 13,000 immigrants in 22 states.
