Fires Fail to Flush Out 2 Fugitives
Fires set in heavy brush along the San Juan River failed to flush out two alleged cop-killers, and authorities said it was less and less likely they were hiding near the Navajo community of Montezuma Creek. Police have been seeking Jason McVean, 26, of Durango, Colo., and Alan “Monte” Pilon, 30, of Dove Creek, Colo. since May 29. The fugitives disappeared into the desolate Four Corners back country and reappeared June 4 near Bluff, about 12 miles west of Montezuma Creek, when a San Juan sheriff’s deputy was shot and seriously wounded near the river. Police found the body of the third suspect nearby, an apparent suicide.
