SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS PLAYOFFS / DIVISION I

Palos Verdes Peninsula (22-1) vs. Corona del Mar (21-1)
3 TODAY / BALBOA BAY RACQUET CLUB
These schools are a good 30 miles apart, but they are developing a pretty good tennis rivalry. Corona del Mar defeated Peninsula six months ago to take the Southern Section Division I girls’ title that had belonged to Peninsula for six years. Earlier in the boys’ season, Peninsula beat Corona del Mar, 81-79, in games after being down two sets and nine games after the second round. Peninsula eliminated Corona del Mar in the semifinals in 1994 and ’96 playoffs. Both those matches were at Corona del Mar, so home court hasn’t been an advantage for the Sea Kings. If there is a favorite in today’s match, it would be Peninsula. Two of its doubles teams meet for the section individual title last weekend and its singles players won seven of nine sets in the semifinals.
