Investigator in Police Torture Case Resigns

NEW YORK — The federal prosecutor in charge of investigating a case of the alleged torture of a Haitian immigrant by New York City police officers has resigned, the U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday.
Catherine Palmer announced her resignation from the case and her 11-year stint in the U.S. attorney’s office, effective Friday. She will go to work for a private law firm. The U.S. attorney’s office said Palmer’s resignation would not affect progress in the high-profile case of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant and security guard who said he was tortured and sodomized with a wooden stick after he was arrested at a Brooklyn club in August.
Four New York City police officers have been charged with assault and face federal charges of civil rights violations.
