NEWPORT BEACH — A former high school English teacher pleaded guilty Monday to having sex with two female students, ages 15 and 16, and was sentenced to a year in County Jail, a court clerk said.
Daniel Schmenk, 52, entered his plea to 11 felony counts of sexual misconduct stemming from incidents that occurred in 1995 and 1996, when he was teaching at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, authorities said.
He was on a leave of absence to pursue a master’s degree program in September 1996 when he was arrested, after evidence surfaced that he had had sex with a 16-year-old girl. Further investigation led the district attorney’s office to file additional charges in connection with the 15-year-old, prosecutors said.
In addition to the jail term, set to begin May 8, Superior Court Judge James K. Turner sentenced Schmenk to five years’ probation.
