Murphy No-Hits Hunters

Junior right-hander Brandon Murphy pitched a five-inning no-hitter and North Hollywood High defeated Canoga Park, 14-0, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference baseball game halted by the 10-run rule Wednesday at North Hollywood.
Murphy struck out nine and the only baserunner for Canoga Park (0-7, 0-2 in league play) was Carlos Gomez, who walked in the first inning. Only two balls were hit to the outfield.
Louie Lopez had three hits, including a two-run double in an eight-run fourth inning for the Huskies (4-2, 2-0). He finished with three runs batted in.
Sylmar 9, Reseda 3--The Spartans took advantage of two errors and three hit batters with the bases loaded to score seven runs in the first inning of a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.
Carl Ball hit a home run for Sylmar (6-1, 2-0), which is ranked No. 10 in The Times’ regional poll.
Rafa Acosta went four for four for Reseda (4-3, 0-2).
Monroe 10, Grant 0--Victor Banuelos (1-2) pitched a five-hitter and Damien Ritter had four hits for the Vikings (3-2-1, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Grant.
Ryan Young had two hits for Grant (0-6, 0-2).
Poly 14, Van Nuys 1--Johnny Manuel hit a home run for the second consecutive game and finished with five RBIs for the Parrots (4-1-1, 1-0-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Van Nuys (2-6-1, 0-1-1) that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Poly scored 14 runs in the fifth inning.
Verdugo Hills 9, Hollywood 7--Ian Carson singled home Frank Rodriguez with the winning run for the Dons (2-0, 2-0) in the eighth inning of a Northern Conference game at Hollywood.
Jason Hovestreydt pitched the bottom of the eighth, striking out two, to save the victory for Carson (1-0).
Thousand Oaks 14, Simi Valley 1--John Smith hit a grand slam to cap a six-run fourth inning for the Lancers in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Jesse Sievers hit a three-run home run for Thousand Oaks (7-0, 1-0).
Quartz Hill 10, Victor Valley 6--Daniel Bailey hit a two-run home run to break a 4-4 tie in the first inning and the Rebels went on to win at Quartz Hill.
Carlos Hernandez, A.J. Ryan, Ryan West and Johnny Smith each had two hits for Quartz Hill (4-1).
