Spotlight: Oakland ‘Living Wage’ Proposal Gets Initial OK

The Oakland City Council gave preliminary approval to a “living wage” ordinance that would require firms doing business with the city to pay employees a minimum of $8 an hour plus benefits. Despite complaints from business groups, the council voted unanimously for the plan, designed to keep workers above the poverty line. Opponents said the ordinance would send a message that Oakland is not a good place to do business. It requires a second reading, scheduled for April 7, to take effect, but is expected to pass.
