UCI Guests to Discuss ‘Public Intellectual’

What brings together a political activist, the president of a major international cultural center and a BBC talk show host?
“Humanities Matters,” a daylong celebration of the 10th anniversary of the UC Humanities Research Institute at UC Irvine.
The eclectic group will gather Thursday at 7 p.m. for a panel discussion on the topic “Is the Public Intellectual Dead?”
Featured will be Angela Davis, UC Santa Cruz professor; Barry Munitz, president of the Getty Center; Michael Ignatieff, filmmaker and BBC television series host; Ron Takaki, UC Berkeley professor; and Emory Elliott, UC Riverside professor.
The panel discussion follows morning and afternoon workshops led by UCI professors. All events are free and will be held in the UCI Student Center’s Crystal Cove auditorium. Information: (714) 824-8180.
