The advent of the euro will make painfully clear the prevailing price discrepancies in identical products from one European country to the next, the result of local tax, regulatory and market differences. This new “transparency” is expected to lead to comparison shopping by Europeans and gradually narrow the difference. The price of a pair of Levis 501 blue jeans in euros, by country, if the euro were in circulation today:
Austria: 36.05
Belgium: 71.30
France: 60.58
Finland: 66.88
Germany: 70.97
