The fate of the city’s Tet parade has been thrown into doubt, as two groups battle out their claims to be the sole legitimate organizers. The Little Saigon Cultural Arts Assn., formed in 1997, has organized the last two parades marking the Vietnamese New Year. But two people appeared before the City Council this week, each claiming to represent the association.
Joey Gioi Nguyen, one of five founding members, said he represents the group and asked the council to recognize his authority and change the parade’s date from Feb. 14, which is before the New Year, to Feb. 20.
But Dancharles Maka’ena, also a founding member, said he represents the group and that Nguyen had broken away and refused to attend their meetings. He asked the council to change the date to Feb. 21.
The council changed the date of the parade to Feb. 21, but postponed deciding who legitimately represents the association.
