Gore Unveils Math Program in L.A. Visit

Vice President Al Gore is swamped by students at Dana Middle School in Hawthorne on Thursday. During a one-day visit to the Southland, he stopped at the school to unveil a new math program called “America Counts,” aimed at helping children master the fundamentals of algebra and geometry by the eighth grade. Left, Gore leads a discussion with government and school officials. Also on Thursday, the vice president announced that California will receive more than $568 million this year in Head Start funds, an increase of more than $40 million over last year.
