Blacks and AIDS

* While I respect Earl Ofari Hutchinson, I believe he is wrong when he says that there would be more money for AIDS victims if they were white (Commentary, Nov. 12). He should read Randy Shilts’ book, “And the Band Played On.”
The truth is, especially in the beginning of the epidemic, and to a degree still today, color has nothing to do with whether or not AIDS gets research money. AIDS primarily strikes male homosexuals and IV drug users, the kind of people most conservatives figure deserve whatever they get. A deadly fatal disease striking heterosexual, African American Christians would, I believe, galvanize the government and the medical community. But as long as this disease kills gays and addicts, there will be too many people in power who think that’s a good thing.
