El Toro Upsets Sailors in Girls’ Cross-Country

Although Newport Harbor runners finished first and second, El Toro upset the third-ranked Sailors, 26-32, in a Sea View League girls’ cross-country meet Wednesday at Fairview Park.
Tanesha White was third for El Toro (2-0), finishing the three-mile course in 19 minutes 46 seconds.
Alicia McFall finished first in 19:02 for the Sailors (0-2), who are ranked third in Southern Section Division II.
In another Sea View League meet:
Irvine 27, Santa Margarita 30--Freshmen Jenny Bechtold and Melissa Ormes finished fourth and fifth to help Irvine win. Irvine, ranked 10th in Division I, is 1-1. Santa Margarita (0-2) is top ranked in Division II.
In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:
Irvine 25, Santa Margarita 34--Steven Murray finished first in 15:07 for visiting Santa Margarita (1-1), but Irvine was able to pull out the victory with second-, third- and fifth-place finishes.
Irvine’s Matt Farrell finished second, running 15:15 on the three-mile course at Heritage Park.
Irvine is 1-1.
Newport Harbor 15, El Toro 43--Curt Herberts won the race for Newport Harbor (2-0) in 15:44 at Fairview Park. Newport Harbor is ranked second in Division II. El Toro is 1-1.
In Empire League girls’ golf:
Western 162, Katella 194--Kristie Park recorded her first birdie of the season and shot 47 for Western (3-4, 3-3) at Anaheim Hills. Katella is 3-2, 3-2.
In nonleague girls’ golf:
Valencia 118, Villa Park 126--Nikki Glowin led host Valencia (7-0) with a six-over 36 at Brea Golf Course. Shelly Raworth of Villa Park (1-5) was the medalist, shooting 34.
University 142, Corona del Mar 156--Angela Won led University with a five-over 41, at Newport Beach Country Club.
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 149, Irvine 185--Melisa Peters shot 12-over 48 for El Toro at the El Toro Marine Base course.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Santa Margarita 16, San Clemente 2--Erin Miller and Tatlana Steinberg swept in singles to lead visiting Santa Margarita (5-2).
Sunny Hills 10, Corona 8--Sophomore’s Katie Williams and Sami Daily won 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to lead visiting Sunny Hills (3-2).
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Santa Margarita 3, Laguna Beach 1--Michelle Davis and Sarah Bellog led Santa Margarita (2-1) with 17 kills each in the 15-8, 15-7, 13-15, 15-12 victory. The Eagles are ranked second in Division II-AA. Laguna Beach is ranked second in Division I-AA.
University 3, Tustin 1--Katie Brandt had 19 kills in the 15-5, 15-9, 11-15, 15-7 victory for host University (3-3).
