Man Admits Lying to Access Confidential Data

A Woodland Hills private investigator who posed as a government employee to obtain confidential information from the Social Security Administration pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal criminal charges.
Daniel Yelin, 29, passed himself off as a Social Security fraud investigator in telephone calls to the agency’s regional office in San Francisco from 1994 to 1997.
As a result, he was able to obtain background information about individuals he was investigating for his business, Sources Investigative Services.
Yelin was originally charged in a 14-count indictment, but in a plea agreement with prosecutors he pleaded guilty to a single felony count of illegally accessing a government computer.
When he is sentenced Feb. 1, Yelin could receive up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
