An International Food Fight

Remember how good fruit and veggies used to taste? Today they do look mighty fine--those pumped-up, steroid-looking apples and chickens--but to the palate are quite tasteless.

Europeans don’t trust our beef or produce [“Public Distrust May Halt Next Phase of Genetically Altered Food Production,” July 16]. They have downright disdain for “genetically engineered foods” and hormone-treated poultry and beef.

Our government may have to punish them if they don’t buy our beef. We apparently are more trusting of regulatory agencies and believe in progress. Growth hormones, bacterial genes with “natural” insecticides may bolster production, but I wonder: What do they do for taste, and ultimately our health?

Gee, if they won’t buy our beef or potatoes, let’s close down all the McDonald’s abroad. That’ll show ‘em. Europeans will be forced to return to “cuisine” eating. I personally volunteer to travel there and oversee our boycott. For my country, I will just have to suffer through those French meals with non-chemically-altered/treated food.

“Garcon! Another steak/frites, s’il vous plait.”
