The deputy head of Turkey’s largest labor union confederation was shot to death outside his home, the Anatolian news agency said, in an attack that came while the union is protesting a government measure to raise the retirement age. Semsi Denizer, 49, general-secretary of the Turk-Is labor confederation, was shot in the head six times in the city of Zonguldak, the news agency said. Police said the suspected gunman, Cengiz Balik was arrested after the attack. Denizer became popular when he led about 50,000 striking coal miners on a 165-mile protest march in 1991. The minimum retirement age now averages 45 for women and 50 for men. The government wants to raise that to 58 for women and 60 for men.
