EntryPoint to ‘Push’ Revised Service on Net

The Idealab company, which in May bought ailing PointCast, today is set to relaunch the service that made “push” technology famous. The San Diego company will change its name from LaunchPad Technologies to EntryPoint.

Like the old PointCast service, EntryPoint will deliver news headlines, stock quotes, sports scores and weather updates to users’ computer desktops via the Internet. The biggest change that users are likely to notice is a higher-profile link to electronic commerce services, especially EntryPoint’s original service, eWallet. But behind the scenes, the program takes up much less space on the user’s hard drive than the old PointCast, said company President Francis Costello.

Neither the PointCast nor eWallet service has proved profitable on its own, but Costello believes that a combination of the services will be more successful. At the very least, the purchase price of PointCast--a reported $7 million--bought eWallet access to PointCast’s 650,000 regular users.
