Prop. 209

Re “Put to Rest the ‘Spirit of Proposition 209,’ ” Commentary, Aug. 4: Leonce Gaiter’s paranoid vision is the only thing that needs to disappear. Exactly what is the point of the ridiculous parable he recounted? I wouldn’t take any amount of money to change who I am, and I’m sure that most people of every color feel the same way.

It’s people like Gaiter who do more to damage race relations than any overwhelmingly supported proposition could ever do. Just because he didn’t get the job doesn’t mean every white person in California is racist. Get a life!

The photo accompanying your front-page article (“Zedillo Key to End of Prop. 187, Villaraigosa Says,” Aug. 4) says all that anyone in the 60% majority of Californians who voted for Prop. 187 needs to know.

Then on your Commentary page, an overly sensitive Gaiter bemoans his fate in an interview. Many of us, of any color, have run into the same slack-jawed, mental midgets as described by Gaiter. So what?

Maybe Gaiter should ask Gov. Gray Davis to get in touch with Nelson Mandela. Maybe another foreign intervention could void another legal California proposition (209).
