Guyana Leader to Step Down

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — This South American nation’s U.S.-born president, whose term in office has been plagued by volatile opposition protests, said Sunday that she is resigning because of poor health.
Chicago-born Janet Jagan, 78, hospitalized in the U.S. last month after a heart attack, said she will be succeeded by the finance minister, Bharat Jagdeo.
Jagan was the nation’s first female leader.
