‘Sweetwater,’ ‘The Promise’ Part of the Small Screen’s Film Lineup

Several new movies are on tap for Sunday, including a TBS thriller and VH1’s first original movie.

Mariel Hemingway, Doug Savant and Gregory Harrison star in TBS’ “First Daughter,” Sunday at 7 p.m. Hemingway plays a Secret Service agent who must rescue her charge, the president’s daughter, when she is kidnapped during a river-rafting trip.

Amy Jo Johnson, Kelli Williams and Michelle Phillips star in VH1’s “Sweetwater,” Sunday at 9 p.m. The fact-based drama chronicles a TV producer’s efforts to find the surviving members of the first band to play Woodstock back in 1969.

Also at 9 p.m. Sunday, Isabella Hoffman and Tracy Nelson star in NBC’s “The Promise,” about a woman seeking justice for her late sister, the victim of domestic violence.

Series

The voices of Jenifer Lewis, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick and funk master George Clinton are featured in the animated “The Bremen Town Musicians,” on HBO’s “Happily Ever After,” tonight at 7:30.

Inspector Barnaby investigates a strangling on the latest installment of A&E;’s mystery series “Midsomer Murders,” Friday at 6 and 10 p.m.

Lifetime presents the second-season premiere of its acclaimed dramatic series “Any Day Now,” Sunday at 10 p.m. Annie Potts and Lorraine Toussaint star as two lifelong friends.

“Intimate Portrait” on Lifetime profiles John Travolta’s better half, actress Kelly Preston, Sunday at 11 p.m.

Bravo presents the Gilbert & Sullivan comic operetta “The Gondoliers,” tonight at 5 and 9.

Teens get to select their favorites in film, TV, music, sports and fashion on Fox’s “The 1999 Teen Choice Awards,” tonight at 8. Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Blink 182 are set to perform. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Melissa Joan Hart are also scheduled to appear.

HBO’s “Fists of Freedom: The Story of the ’68 Summer Games,” Friday at 10 p.m., looks back at the memorable moment when U.S. Olympic athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their gloved fists in a Black Power salute. Smith, Ralph Boston, Bob Beamon, George Foreman and Bob Seagren are featured.

The popular group Earth, Wind & Fire performs its hits in a concert taped last year in New York, Friday at 7:30 p.m. on KOCE.

“Donald Cammell: The Ultimate Performance,” Friday at 8 p.m. on IFC, presents interviews with the stars of Cammell’s 1970 directorial debut, “Performance.” The bizarre film, which was co-directed by Nicolas Roeg, follows at 9:15 p.m.

The legendary Yankee is the subject of the PBS documentary “Yogi Berra: Deja Vu All Over Again,” Friday at 9 p.m. on KCET-TV. Bob Costas narrates.

“Ray Charles in Concert,” Friday at 10 p.m. on KOCE, finds the multiple-Grammy winner performing in a benefit performance for the blind. The special also airs Saturday at 8 p.m. on KCET-TV.

The Discovery Channel’s “Discovery Kids Weekend,” Sunday at 9 a.m., features a group of shark-related shows in conjunction with the network’s “Shark Week.”
