Re “Honor for a Little-Known Giant,” editorial, Aug. 5: Dr. Edgar Wayburn’s vision, highly respected environmental leadership and wise counsel to the Sierra Club over 50 years are significant and merit the Medal of Freedom. We can all particularly thank Wayburn for many parks and preserved wilderness areas in the West and North--mountains, forests, rivers and seashores.
Alaska’s parks and preserved areas we particularly owe to Wayburn’s foresight and his years of tireless commitment and energy while working with the Carter administration to create the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, with its significant, large areas of wilderness preserved for future generations of Americans.
