Sandra O’Leary; State Department Official

Sandra B. O’Leary, 50, a top State Department economic official in both Republican and Democratic administrations. O’Leary served as an economic advisor to Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker before eventually becoming a deputy assistant secretary of state for economic policy in the Clinton administration. Most recently, she worked as a professor at the Foreign Service Institute and the National Defense University. On Monday in McLean, Va., of cancer.

William Slayton; Urban Renewal Pioneer

William L. Slayton, 82, an urban renewal pioneer who headed a federal agency charged with refurbishing American cities. Slayton was commissioner of the Urban Renewal Administration in the Housing and Home Finance Agency under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. After the Department of Housing and Urban Development was formed in 1966, Slayton left government service and became executive vice president of Urban American, creator of the National Urban Coalition. Among his assignments at the State Department, Slayton was responsible for overseeing the design and construction of a number of embassies and other federal facilities. His career also included a stint as executive vice president of the American Institute of Architects. On Saturday in Washington, D.C., of a stroke.
