City Councilman Shawn Boyd reminded residents Tuesday that some may be eligible for a utility tax exemption. Residents older than 65 who earn less than $33,132 annually qualify for an exemption from the 11% tax on electricity, gas, telephone, water and cable television bills. The city code provision is not new, but more people should take advantage of it, Boyd said. “This could be a major benefit to a lot of people.” Of the city’s 27,000 residents, 11,000 are seniors, Boyd said. An application is available at City Hall.
