I am a retired U.S. teacher and I sometimes cook. When I divide a recipe in half, instead of 1 3/4 cups of sugar I use 7/8 cup, not 3 1/2 cups.
Math instruction could be improved by better textbooks that recognize the need for repetition and review when learning a skill.
