Villaraigosa

* I read “Some Allies Urge Speaker Not to Run for Mayor” (Aug. 18) three times, each time searching in vain for the Antonio Villaraigosa “backers” that the headline said were against the Assembly speaker running for mayor. The article quotes but one unnamed source and never mentions who these supposed “allies” are. It reads like a press release leaked from one of Villaraigosa’s opponents in an attempt to clear the field of the speaker, a leader who holds the promise of being able to forge a Tom Bradley-like coalition capable of uniting our city during the first decade of the next millennium. I’m disappointed that The Times would print such a hatchet job.

* Villaraigosa running for mayor? He’d have a better chance of becoming president of Mexico if his supporters in California slipped across the border to vote.
