Los Angeles Times Food Editor Russ Parsons has won a Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Award for his story about the first revision of the popular “Joy of Cooking” cookbook in 20 years.
“A Heaping Cupful of Conflict” detailed the controversy between the edition’s writers and its high-powered editor as well as changes made in the book first published in 1931 by Irma Rombauer.
The article took first place in the food and nutrition category of the contest, which is sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism and is the oldest and best-known feature writing competition in the U.S.
Runners-up included USA Today, the Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. Parsons’ article was published in November 1997.
