WARSAW — The endorsement of the pope has sent sales of cream cakes in a southern Polish town skyrocketing.
Demand for cream cakes in Wadowice soared more than 10 times after John Paul II casually told residents of his hometown during a June visit that he had enjoyed the treats as a boy, the PAP news agency reported Wednesday.
Bakery shops say they now sell 2,500 kremowki--or cream cakes--a day to local residents and tourists.
Before the pope’s visit, they averaged 200 a day, the report said.
