* San Diego-based Petco Animal Supplies Inc. reported second-quarter net income, excluding merger and other charges, of $4.1 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with $2.3 million, or 11 cents, a year ago. Sales rose 20%, to a record $236.2 million from $197.3 million. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 12.1%.

* Carlsbad-based Sunrise Medical Inc. reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss of $2.7 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with a loss of $13.7 million, or 62 cents, a year ago. Sales fell 4% to $162 million. During the quarter, the company eliminated 600 jobs.
