They Believe in Cher and a Concert That Was Pure Fun

The only thing “painful” about Cher’s concert at the Anaheim Pond was reading Robert Hilburn’s review (“A Show Solely for Believers,” Aug. 23).
I make it a point to ignore anything written by Hilburn because he is so out of touch and so negative, but I had to see what he wrote about Cher. It makes me wonder if he was at the same concert, a concert that was full of fun, life, talent and pure entertainment.
As far as Cher “compounding matters with mostly inferior material,” all he had to do was look around him to see that a tremendous mix of people--young, old, gay, straight, “cool” and “square”--were there enjoying material that in no way seemed inferior to them.
Hilburn is completely unable to appreciate what is sorely lacking in today’s music: namely good, fun entertainment.

Wow! What a difference a day makes. The same concert that Robert Hilburn found “painful” on Friday night was stupendous by the performance I saw on Saturday. Lovingly constructed and directed, the concert spanned Cher’s considerable career over three decades and managed to remind us of her best film, TV and recording moments in a multimedia cacophony of delight.

Yes, the show was--dare I say it in Hilburn’s presence--fun! But here’s a news flash: Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be fun! Spare me the “U2 as musical prophets” bit and lighten up! Long live la diva, Cher!

Hilburn may find U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” a sacred experience, but Bono and company certainly did not complain when Pet Shop Boys turned it into a cheesy dance hit. Get a life!
