HANOI — A U.S. Catholic Conference delegation began a historic visit to Vietnam this week to enhance mutual understanding.
The eight-member delegation, headed by the Most Rev. Joseph Fiorenza, arrived in Hanoi on Thursday. They also plan to visit the central city of Hue and Ho Chi Minh City during the weeklong trip.
The delegation, which includes an archbishop and three bishops, will meet with local church and government officials, including a deputy prime minister. It is the first official visit to Vietnam by members of the American Catholic hierarchy and comes at a time when Vietnamese Catholics have complained of discrimination against them.
