The Planning Commission criticized a Cox Communications Inc. plan to install 124 power-supply boxes throughout the city last week.
A Cox spokesman said the company believed it had the legal right to install natural gas-powered generators that would run Cox phone, Internet and television services during power failures.
But commissioners expressed interest in an alternate plan that would install larger generators at some sites, which could result in the removal of many existing boxes.
The generators would allow Cox customers to call for help during emergencies, spokesman Dick Waterman said.
