AROUND THE NFL : Cowboys’ Jones Is Arrested

From Associated Press

Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones was arrested Sunday after he drove away with his family before a police officer had finished writing a speeding ticket in Highland Park, Texas.

Jones was in one vehicle and his family was behind him in another vehicle around 10:30 a.m. Sunday on their way to church for the christening of Jones’ grandson.

An employee of Jones’ was driving the other vehicle.

Highland Park police chief Darrell Fant said an officer pulled over the other vehicle for going 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. Jones was not stopped, but pulled over on his own and went to where an officer was questioning the driver of the other car.

“He said he was in a rush and asked if he could go ahead and take the family members on to church,” Fant said. “The officer told him, ‘I’ll just be a minute. I’ll do this as fast as I can.’ He made some remark and then did not follow the order of the officer and took the vehicle anyway.”

Another police vehicle tried to pull Jones over, but he did not stop.

Jones proceeded to the Highland Park United Methodist Church on the Southern Methodist University campus, about a mile from where the traffic stop took place.

Jones let his family out at the church, then drove off again. Around the corner, he pulled into a private drive, where police arrested him.

The Cowboys released a statement during their 22-12 exhibition victory over the Denver Broncos at Irving, Texas on Sunday night.

“I am sorry this has become an issue,” Jones said. “This matter occurred because of my very sincere effort to get all of my family to the christening of our grandson.”

Jones was charged with fleeing the scene, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to a $2,000 fine and six months in jail.

The driver of a Ford Taurus ran a red light and slammed into the driver’s side of Fields’ car. Fields was pronounced dead at the scene.
