DIVISION VI CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Newport Harbor (12-0-1) vs. Irvine (10-2-1)
7:30 TONIGHT
ORANGE COAST COLLEGE
This championship game could be low-scoring, since it features two great defenses. Maybe no defense is better right now than Irvine’s, which is led by linebackers Mike Patterson and Jeff Patty. The Vaqueros stuffed one of Orange County’s leading runners, Loara’s Billy Chavez, for minus-two yards in 13 carries last week, and held Michael Williams of top-seeded Lakewood Mayfair to 69 yards in 25 carries. A similar obstacle stands before them in Newport Harbor’s Andre Stewart. When these teams met in Week 6 in the Sea View League opener, Newport Harbor won, 12-10, as Stewart rushed 30 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. However, the result might have been reversed had Newport Harbor’s Garrett Troncale not blocked Jessob Reisbeck’s 35-yard field-goal attempt with 4:52 left. There are two potentially important injury notes. In the first meeting, Irvine receiver James Whitted didn’t play because of a knee injury. This week, Newport Harbor will be without right tackle Robert Cole, who broke his leg in the semifinals.
