‘Westside Story’

Regarding the cancellation of “Westside Story” in Amherst (Dec. 7): I think we should go further than just canceling Leonard Bernstein’s remake of “Romeo and Juliet.” Let’s cancel all productions of the original “Romeo and Juliet.” I’m part-Italian and I very much resent the portrayal of Italians as violent, petty and irresponsible in matters of love. Shakespeare, a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, has no right to criticize olive-skinned Mediterranean Catholics. Isn’t my fragile ego sufficient reason for everyone else to stop enjoying a classic work of stage art?
