Merlo, Capistrano Valley Defeat Irvine in Overtime

Capistrano Valley, ranked sixth in Orange County, squeaked past unranked Irvine, 9-8, when senior Lesley Merlo scored with 1 minute 29 seconds remaining in the second sudden-death overtime period in a nonleague girls’ water polo game Friday at Saddleback College.
Amber Stachowski scored two of her four goals in overtime for Capistrano Valley (1-1).
Lindsay Stephens and Sarah Hamilton each scored two goals for Irvine (5-1), which sent the game into overtime when Agnes Prawdzik scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation to make it 6-6.
In another nonleague game:
No. 3 Villa Park 8, No. 10 Corona del Mar 6--Cindy Henn scored three goals for host Villa Park (6-3). Melinda Tucker and sophomore Lauren Guthrie each scored three goals for Corona del Mar (5-4).
In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:
Irvine 4, Brea Olinda 1--Matt Taylor scored two goals and Kyle Ritter made five saves for Irvine (5-0), which plays Servite at Brea in the final today. Brea (4-1-1) plays La Mirada for third place at 2:15 p.m. today.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
No. 6 Fountain Valley 4, University 1--Cliff McKinley broke a 1-1 tie with a penalty kick in the 65th minute for Fountain Valley. McKinley, who also scored on a breakaway in the first half, has 11 goals in eight games for the Barons (7-1).
No. 7 Edison 1, Laguna Hills 0--Danny Collins scored in the 12th minute off an assist from Devin Kato for Edison (5-0).
No. 8 El Toro 5, Orange 1--Sem Lopez scored three goals and Nader Jazayeri had three assists for host El Toro (3-2-1).
No. 9 Santa Ana 2, Kennedy 1--Santa Ana’s Carlos Nava had a goal and an assist for the visiting Saints. David Kelemen scored in the 75th minute for Kennedy (3-2).
Canyon 3, Esperanza 3--Canyon (5-4-2) scored three second-half goals within 10 minutes to tie the score. Ahmed Khalil scored twice for the Comanches, including the tying goal with seven minutes left.
Darren Manska scored two of the three first-half goals for Esperanza.
Estancia 14, La Quinta 0--Cesar Terrones scored six goals for host Estancia (5-1-1).
Loara 3, Bell Gardens 1--Dardo Acuna scored two goals for Loara (3-2), including the winning goal in the second half.
Los Amigos 4, Savanna 1--Nestor Castillo scored three goals for Los Amigos (2-1-2).
Los Alamitos 2, Paramount 1--Andrew Bornstein scored in the 65th minute to break a 1-1 tie for visiting Los Alamitos (5-1-3).
Marina 1, Westminster 1--Geovanny Quingaiza scored the tying goal in the 70th minute for host Marina (5-2-1). Henry Morales scored in the 50th minute for Westminster (7-5-1).
